It is with sadness and heavy hearts, we say goodbye to our father, grandfather, and great grandfather David Walter Thomson, who passed away peacefully at the Hanover and District Hospital on Sunday, February 18, 2024.
Born August 8, 1931, to the late Sarah and Herb Thomson, David was raised along with his four sisters on the 8th of Brant. He took over the 4th generation family farm in 1952. David married Helen (Fisk) in 1954 and they were blessed with four sons, Dennis (Shamiran), Wayne (Darlene), Alan (Kim), and Keith (Shelley) who currently reside on the family homestead. David was extremely proud of his five grandchildren, Jarrett, Bailey (Ryan), Alyssa (Kenzie), Alex (Katie) as well as his two great grandsons Dawson and Deacon.
He will be greatly missed by his sister Shirley Litt and his special friend Carolyn Meyer.
David is predeceased by his wife Helen of 61 years, grandson David, and sisters and brother in laws, Dorothy (Arnold Craig), Elva (Bert Watson), Vera (Stew Haase) and Russell Litt.
David and Helen were kept busy farming the land he loved. He felt the farm was a great place to raise their family. David remained quite active on the farm well into his eighties.
David was very active in community service. In 1966, he began a career in politics that spanned over 36 years. He held many positions over his lifetime, starting with being a school board trustee to Reeve of Brant Township and then the first Mayor of the newly amalgamated Municipality of Brockton. He was honoured to be chosen as Bruce County Warden in 1990. David served on many committees throughout his career and was proud to be Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Hanover and District Hospital. He was also involved with the Elmwood Community Centre Board and the Saugeen Municipal Airport. David was instrumental in bringing a library to Cargill by donating the land upon which it is situated.
He loved serving the community and was a humble, yet appreciative leader evidenced by his words, “We should pause and give thanks for our ancestors who cleared this land and made this such a marvellous place to live”.
Friends and Family are invited for a memorial visitation from 1:00 pm to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday February 25, 2024, at Cameron’s in Walkerton.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Hanover and District Hospital Foundation or the
Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. Donations and Condolences may be made online at www.cameronfuneralhomes.com
