Wilbert spent much of his life as a farmer – he grew up on a farm outside Carlsruhe and then attended post-secondary education in Hamilton for Mechanical Engineering but decided that wasn’t for him and began a career as a machinist in Kitchener. He married his sweetheart, Joan, from his home stomping grounds in 1964 and together started a family with intentions of raising their children in the city. But after 4 kids, plans changed, and an opportunity presented itself to move home to Bruce County.
In 1973, Bert and Joan moved their young family and took over his parent’s farm and they worked side by side on the dairy farm just west of Carlsruhe for many years. Bert’s experience with fabrication and as a machinist proved valuable as he was able to fix his own equipment.
As their children grew up and moved out, the farm changed to beef and field crops. Bert and Joan were able to realize their dream of building a new home on the back 50 acres and moved there in 2000. For a while, Bert resumed his machining career until he really retired.
Bert enjoyed his family and felt blessed with 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren (So far)
