Elizabeth “Betty” Maude Poole Obituary
It is with sadness and much love that we mourn the passing of Elizabeth Maude Poole of Trenton Ontario on March 24th, 2024 at age 96. Elizabeth (Betty) was born on February 16th, 1928 in Port Arthur, District of Thunder Bay. Her birth name was Elizabeth Robina Gertrude Fairlie. She was a younger sister to George.
Times were very difficult for the family resulting in both George and Elizabeth being placed for adoption. At 18 months, she was adopted by John and Irene Lewis of Toronto, where she was raised. Her legal name changed to Elizabeth Maude Lewis. She was separated from her brother at that time but stayed in touch with him until his death several years ago.
Betty attended Trenton Business College where she excelled at all aspects of being an administrative assistant. She was particularly talented at the lost art of stenography. Betty worked many years, finishing her career at the Hastings County Board of Education- Trenton High School.
Betty married the love of her life, Leonard Poole, on July 26th, 1952. Together, they built their life long home on Loyalist Parkway, overlooking the bay of Quinte as well as a cottage on Wellers Bay. Betty and Leonard raised two sons, Scott and Mark, instilling in them integrity, honesty and excellent work ethic, all characteristics they believed in and lived by.
Music and dance were a big part of her life, including piano which was one of her favourite pastimes. She loved listening to big band, Elvis, Roy Orbison and Roy Clark. Betty and Leonard would attend “The Friday Nighters” and dance the night away. She was an active member in the UCW. She was also a lifelong chartered member of the Trenton Lioness club where she enjoyed a busy service and social schedule.
Betty was an excellent cook. Every night, a beautiful meal with her family at the dinner table was a must.
When her grandchildren started to arrive she happily took an active role in their lives. Whether it was swimming lessons or an annual trip to Cat World, she was a dedicated grandmother.
Betty will be lovingly remembered by her children Scott (Teresa), Mark (Karen)and her grandchildren Carlin Poole Romanidis, Tyler Poole, Victoria Poole, Nathan Poole and Sarah Poole. Betty was blessed with great grandchildren Parker, Ellie, Owen and Alex. She will also be missed by numerous relatives, neighbours and friends.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to Betty’s Loyalist Parkway neighbours for all of their assistance over the years as well as the staff at Westgate Lodge for their care and compassion.
Friends and relatives are invited to a celebration of life which will be held May 5th 2024 at the Trenton Lions Club, 77 Campbell St., Trenton Ontario, from 1pm until 4pm.
