William Winfield Obituary
Bill Winfield was blessed with a long and wonderful life. From humble beginnings in tiny Digby, Nova Scotia, Bill paid his own way through university, achieving a B.Sc from McGill. He settled in Toronto and embarked on a 30-year career as an executive in the Pharma industry, where he married his first wife Barbara, and they had a son Dwight. He was a lifetime member and past president of the HRPAO. An athletic and energetic man, he played several sports sports: basketball, wrestling, golf and squash. He had a lifetime squash membership at the Skyline Hotel Squash Club where he played for over 40 years. He cared for his first wife in her later years as she struggled with Alzheimers, and as a creative outlet, he became a Maritime Folk artist, and wrote a book “Stranger in My House”. He met his second wife Helen at the Church of Atonement in Etobicoke, where he was a wonderful reader. He was a gentle man – friendly, loved by children and dogs, a good listener, and a great speaker. If there was an opportunity for someone to offer a few words, Bill was the first person to stand up. He loved to share stories. He visited over 40 countries in his life, but when Helen met him, he had never been to McDonald’s. One could be lulled into thinking he was an easy-going, friendly Maritimer, but those who were closest to him knew him to be intelligent, driven, and results oriented. His family is grateful for his example and feels very lucky to have had him with them for so long.
Bill passed away unexpectedly at his home in Etobicoke at the age of 95, with Helen and his beloved dog Molly by his side. He shared 9 wonderful years with Helen. He was a wonderful father to Dwight (Carol) and will be dearly missed by Debra (Tony) and Scot (Angela). He was a cherished grandfather, great grandfather, and great great-grandfather. He will be fondly remembered by his nephews and extended family members. He is predeceased by his first wife, Barbara, and his sister Dorothy “Dickie”.
A private family service will take place. Friends are welcome to a Memorial Reception on Saturday, February 10 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at Ridley Funeral Home, 3080 Lake Shore Blvd. (at Fourteenth Street between Kipling and Islington).
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada in memory of Bill would be appreciated by the family.
