It is with profound sadness we report that Rob passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, after a short and courageous battle with periampullary cancer. Rob is predeceased by his parents, Robert Gordon Dale and Mary Austin Dale (née Babcock). He is survived by his Aunt Janet Gouinlock (née Babcock). Beloved husband and best friend of Rosemary Dale (née Colquhoun) for almost 50 years. Loving Dad to Reesy (Michael), Tory (Phil) and George (Lisa). Adored Grandad to Teddy, Betty, Gordie, Annie and Emma. Steadfast brother to John (Kate) Dale, Brother-in-law to Ian (Patti) Colquhoun and uncle to Christopher Dale and Stephanie Varey (née Dale). Rob will be remembered fondly by many as a friend, cousin, neighbour, coach, teammate, and long-suffering Leaf fan.
Rob was born and lived his entire life in Toronto. Childhood summers were spent hauling wood and water on Pinedale Island in the French River. Winters were spent outdoors playing shinny. Rob attended Blythwood Public School where he was a track and field champion, peaked academically in grade three by skipping right to grade five, and forged many lifelong friendships. He continued his athletic, academic and social career at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute. Rob earned his Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Trinity College, University of Toronto, in 1972. He began his finance career at Clarkson Gordon. Rob struck up a conversation with fellow Dawlish Avenue resident Rosemary about the 1972 Summit Series on the bus downtown one morning and the rest is history.
Rob’s penchant for numbers led him to work for Toronto Dominion Bank for over 30 years, but he always put family first. Fireside and lakeside games of Scrabble with Rosemary were a cherished daily ritual spanning decades. Friends and neighbours of all ages and of all Dales were always welcome at 24 Ridley Boulevard.
Rob coached every hockey, t-ball and slow-pitch team Reesy, Tory and George played on and never missed a match, graduation or performance while they were growing up. He was always available for a game of catch, a paddle in the canoe or a skate around the rink.
Rob never missed an opportunity to help solve a math problem, use proper grammar, wash the dishes, or dispense Odgen Nash-inspired wisdom. He loved playing and watching all sports, organizing golf excursions, raucous pillow fights with his grandkids, his part-time gig at the Hockey Hall of Fame and most of all spending time at Rossdhu cottage on Lake Rosseau with Rosemary. He will be remembered as walking around with a golf club in his hand and a smile on his face. Rob taught us to appreciate the small wins and simple pleasures found in each and every day.
Rob will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A funeral service will be held at St. Clement’s Church at 70 St. Clements Avenue on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 3 p.m.
