June 17, 1947 – January 1, 2024
On January 1, 2024, John Stuart Grant died peacefully in hospital from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. A vibrant, active man most of his life, John loved to travel with his wife and their friends, and his daughters and their families. He visited at least 15 countries in his 76 years, including Bali, China, Colombia, Greece, Korea and Morocco. He also enjoyed trips closer to home, like annual visits to cottages in Beaulac, Quebec and Horseshoe Lake in Minden, Ontario.
An avid tennis player, in his later years he took up boxing to counteract some of the effects of Parkinson’s, a disease he battled for 17 years. He was incredibly brave throughout his journey, rarely complaining despite the progression of his symptoms and becoming an active member of the Parkinson’s community, his wife and caregiver Carole, by his side.
John was an award-winning graphic designer and proud OCAD alumni. He took up painting when he retired, filling his home with bright, abstract works of art and a few family portraits. He had a great sense of humour and loved to incite awe from babies and little kids with his Three Stooges finger snaps.
John was predeceased by his parents Stuart and Rose Grant of Burlington and is survived by his wife of 52 years Carole; his daughters Vanessa (Jon), Lauren (Michael), niece and honorary daughter Lea; grandchildren Jackson, Ronan, Hawksley and Juniper; sisters Janet and Jean; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held in summer 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson Canada.
