Donald Ferguson MacLean
January 4, 1927 to October 6, 2023
Donald (Don) Ferguson MacLean passed away at 96 years old. He was a kind person to everyone and a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He always loved to talk to people everywhere he went. He had a tremendous sense of humour and would often make people laugh (or groan) with his jokes and puns.
Don was raised by his parents, Richard and Olive, with his siblings, Keith, Leonard and Joan, in Montreal. He attended McGill University where he met and eventually married the love of his life, Carmen in 1955. They were both excellent dancers and loved dancing together whenever they could. Don graduated as a Mechanical Engineer and soon he and Carmen moved to Toronto where he was employed. They raised their children, Susan, Laurie and Richard there.
Eventually Don switched careers to become a High School Math Teacher. He taught at Westwood Secondary School in Peel Region (now called Lincoln Alexander) until his retirement. Teaching was his passion. He always brought his sense of humour into the classroom to help teach his students. Don coached tennis and loved playing hockey on the student-teacher team.
Don was actively involved with the Transfiguration of Our Lord Catholic Church, from the time it was first built right around the corner from home. He was an excellent public speaker, and eventually became the head lector at Transfiguration for many years. Don continued being a lector for religious services at his retirement home, when he and Carmen moved into the Village of Humber Heights in 2009.
Don’s home at Humber Heights was wonderful. He lived there for 14 years. In addition to reading at services, he was elected to the residents’ council. Don participated in many of the activities offered and was well known and liked by the staff and residents. The family wishes to thank everyone at Humber Heights for taking such good care of him and giving him such a caring and supportive environment in which to live out his life.
Don is predeceased by his wife Carmen who passed away in 2014 and his daughter Laurie who passed away in 2015. He is survived by his daughter Susan (husband Ulf) and son Richard. He also has many grandchildren: Linnea, Rachel Dawn, Jennifer, Aaron, Joshua, Sarah (Josh), Rebekah, Luke (Amy), Mark (Hailey), Elizabeth and John (Kathryn). He was also blessed with several great-grandchildren: Jude, Acacia, Caellum, Emmanuelle, Mitchell, Jamie, Jack, Shawn and Charlotte. He is loved and will be missed by all.
Cremation has taken place. The family will receive their friends for visitation at NEWEDIUK FUNERAL HOME, KIPLING CHAPEL, 2058 Kipling Avenue, Toronto (north of Rexdale Blvd), on Monday, October 16, 2023 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will follow at Transfiguration of Our Lord Church 45 Ludstone Drive, Toronto 11 a.m. Inurnment: Assumption Catholic Cemetery, 6933 Tomken Road, Mississauga. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation or Plant a Tree in Memory would be appreciated by the family.
