David Ballem, 89, died peacefully on August 10, 2024 at North York General hospital after a short battle with pneumonia. David Grenville Ballem was born on February 11, 1935, in Southampton, England. He is predeceased by father Harold J Ballem and mother Phyllis Constance (nee Oram) and brother, Michael.
David was the much-loved husband of Kim, father to Scott and Amanda, step-father to Jane, Susan, Tina, Brian, David, Lana, and Sylvia, and grandfather to Beatrice, Orson, Ted, and Henry, as well as eight step-grandchildren.
After working as a police officer in England, he emigrated to Canada in 1969 and worked for most of his professional life as an engineer. This gave him the opportunity to travel the world, which he very much enjoyed. His interest in travel extended beyond his work, and in retirement David and Kim explored many places, including Bermuda, China, and the south of France. David also had a love of British comedy and kept up to date with the BBC World News. In his free time, he delighted in using his engineering skills to make things in his workshop and tested his brain power completing cryptic crosswords and other puzzles.
Our beloved David will be lovingly remembered by family and friends. He embodied strength, courage, determination, and optimism, especially during his final years while facing health difficulties. David took joy from simple pleasures, like visits with family, a good cup of coffee and watching TV and films. He will be missed by all who knew him.
A private funeral will be held in early September.
