BARANEK, Betty – It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Betty Baranek, our beloved mother, Bubie and great-Bubie.
Born in 1936 in Vilna, Poland, Betty was the daughter of Benjamin (z”l) and Esther (z”l) Eidelman. When World War II broke out, her family escaped to Siberia, where she remained with her parents for the next few years. After the war and time in a German DP Camp, she and her family settled in Haifa, Israel before coming to Canada.
Soon after settling in Toronto, Betty attended a dance for recent Jewish immigrants. Here she met a young Holocaust survivor named Martin Baranek. It was bashert. Overcoming great hurdles through incredible hard work, Betty and Martin built a life together. They had four children in eleven years: Morry (z”l), Mark, Lenny, and Marlene.
Betty was the most devoted wife to Martin. She was a true partner, maintaining a home while he maintained and grew a business. Their hard work paid off. As the kids got older, Betty and Martin began travelling the world with their dearest friends who played such a vital role in their lives. Their home was filled with tchotchkes from Hong Kong to Australia.
Hallandale, Florida, soon became an important part of Betty and Martin’s lives together. There, they forged new and enduring friendships that gave them both great joy.
As the years went on, Betty could be found on the tennis court, going on long walks or playing mahjong. Their friends and family in Israel remain, to this day, part of their closest circle.
Betty knew that with this comfort, she had a duty to give back. She began to volunteer at Baycrest, and supported a great many causes. Along with Martin, she was a founding member of Beth Torah. She could be found there on most Saturday mornings. It was her happy place.
Betty was so blessed to have Arlene, Ita, and Nava as her incredibly devoted daughters- in-law. They were there for whatever she needed, always offering a helping hand in her care. She was also very fortunate to have Sam and Syd in her world.
Betty flourished in the role of Bubie. Hayley (Uriel), Reide (Cam), Jamie, Palmer (Sam), Brett, Sam, Brandon, Jenna, and Cole were her joys. She avidly kept up with her grandchildren’s personal and professional lives, shepping nachas at their accomplishments. The extra dividend came in the form of her great-grandchildren, Maya, Judah, and Mercer.
Betty was also the loving sister and sister- in-law of Sam (z”l) and Susan Eidelman, and Marvin (z”l) and Rhonda Eidelman. Betty’s caregivers, Belinda, Sally and Maryanne, were especially devoted to her. We are forever grateful to their dedication and their love. We also cannot thank Dr. Gili Rosen enough for all her care over these last several years. Betty touched so many people and her legacy of kindness, generosity, and courage will not be forgotten.
We will miss her terribly, but her memory endures.
