ALEXANDRU, Becuta – Was born in Bacau, Romania on July 5, 1928. Her parents were Isaac and Sophie Bercovich. She married Lupu Alexandru in 1949. She obtained a degree in engineering from Moscow University, and worked as an engineer in Bucharest. The family moved to Toronto in 1971. Becuta worked as a librarian at the University of Toronto library, retiring from 1993. Lupu passed away in 2011, and Becuta passed away at Hazelton Place on June 11, 2024. She is survived by her daughter, Ileana Kahan and her son-in-law Meldon Kahan, and grandchildren, Jonathan Kahan and Deborah Kahan. She has five great grandchildren: Hailey, Benjamin, Ella, Elise and Theodore.
Throughout her life, Becuta showed great courage and dedication in protecting her family and community. As a teenager, she was part of the resistance against the fascist regime in Romania. She and her husband Lupu worked very hard and took great risks to get themselves and their families out of Communist Romania. She will be deeply missed by family and friends.
