On February 21, 2024, Audrey Louise MacIntyre (80) died peacefully surrounded by her husband, and children, at Sunnybrook Hospital.
She was predeceased by her parents, James Kinkade and Winnifred McMurray of Stratford, Ontario and her son Jim, and grandmother Elsie Holden. She is survived by her loving, devoted husband Lach, daughters Lois, Kelli Nigh (Bill), sons Peter (Kirsten), Joel, and sister Susan Whitlock (Peter). Audrey was adored by her grandchildren: David, Jessica, Ryan, Brittany, Alanna.
Audrey was blessed to have a wonderful, extended family that included her aunts, Cora Mitchell, Edith Hastings, Ruth Squire uncles, Herb Holden and Art Holden, cousins Bill Squire, Doug Squire, Phil Mitchell, Corina Mitchell, David Hastings, Ed Hastings, Warren Hastings, Deborah Kunder nephews and nieces Alex, Anne Marie, Lena, Simon.
While Audreys family roles were of upmost importance to her, she had many roles in the community.
Audrey was a social change advocate, church leader, cottager, animal lover, adventurer, square dancer, autoharp player, tea shop operator, warm welcomer, tough cookie, great listener, and a solid friend.
Among many things, she was Executive Director of Community Living Gananoque, and the driving spirit behind Citizens Against Restraints. Her son, Jim, was killed by a restraint inflicted on him by staff at a hostel in Toronto. Audrey pursued justice for Jim and her advocacy work that grew out of that tragedy had an impact across Ontario.
Audrey was a devoted wife for over 60 years, having met her future husband in Stratford Ontario when they were teens. They raised five children together, ran restaurants together, served and befriended societally devalued people, travelled, loved, danced, and rarely parted.
Audrey enriched many of our lives. She will be missed and loved in memory.
A memorial service will be held on March 23rd at 11am at Grace Church on the Hill in Toronto. Those who plan on attending please RSVP to the service and reception at joelmacintyre@hotmail.com
