Bertrand, Judy (1939–2024) passed quietly from this life into her eternal one on Sunday, February 4th, 2024. Born in Bourlamaque, Quebec and raised in Timmins, Judy was a tenderhearted girl who showed promise in her younger years as a singer with aspirations to perform. A fashion plate at heart, she dreamed of a career in Montreal – a city full of excitement and culture. That dream was sadly interrupted when in her 20s, Judy developed a significant and life-altering mental illness. Met with recurrent challenges and losses throughout her life, she was strong-willed and resilient in the face of it all. Her courage is to be admired. Judy never did get back to Montreal, but she talked right into her later years about how she’d love to be there.
Despite her struggles, Judy had unwavering faith that something better was possible. She looked to God with expectant hope and took great solace in the promise of heaven. In her best moments, Judy was proud and dignified. She had a real sense of humour and charm about her that could be quite endearing. She was known to counsel those around her that “we all have our problems” – as if assuring herself while assuring others that things could always be worse. Judy was her most heartbreakingly human in those moments. She taught those around her the value of perseverance, the meaning of empathy, and the importance of supportive relationships. In this life, we need each other.
Throughout adulthood, Judy required specialized care. Thank you to the health professionals in the community who provided it with kindness and sensitivity. In the last several years, Judy lived at the Golden Manor where she made meaningful connections with the staff who tried their best to create as comfortable an environment for her as possible. We are especially thankful for Debbie Kapias, NP and the staff on West 2 for providing Judy with excellent end-of-life care. It was very touching and comforting to witness their fondness for Judy. The gentle, compassionate manner they exemplified through such a difficult time is greatly appreciated.
Judy is survived by her two sisters and primary caregivers, Muguette Freeman-Beaucage and Marie Rimmer (Joe); two brothers, Yves (Marion) and Jackie (Rosemary); as well as many nieces and nephews in a large extended family. During the last year of her life, Judy developed a special bond with her great-niece Lily, who will miss visiting her on Sunday afternoons alongside her grandma. Judy is predeceased by her father Raoul, brothers Gilbert and Ronald, sister Joceline, and lifelong friend Rene Poupart. She is finally reunited with her devoted mother, Colette. If ever there were a pair in heaven, it’s them. White gloves, lipstick, and all the trimmings.
As per Judy’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to LESSARD Funeral and Cremation Centre. To those reading this, an unsolicited act of kindness in Judy’s memory would do the world some good.
“We’ve all got our problems …” You just never know whose life you may touch.
