John Weesk
The family announces with sorrow his passing on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at the Timmins and District Hospital at the age of 84 years. Loving husband of Annie Weesk (nee Tookate). Dear father of Clara, Morris (Lindsay) and Francois. Loving grandfather of Trevor, Tobias, Amadeus, Johnathon, Kory, Leiland, Landen, Mason, Wyatt, Tyson, Theresa and Simeon and his jabans Owen, Emry and Alex. Dear brother of Anastasia. Predeceased by his son Bernie, his parents Raphael and Laura, his brother William and his sisters Margaret, Bernadette and Bertha. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was born in the “bush” (ke-pash-kow) near Fort Albany. He was a Master Electrician and retired from Ontario Northland Railway in November of 1999. In his early years, he attended both St. Anne’s and Fort George Residential Schools where he learnt his trade from Brother Odette. In 1970, the family moved to Moosonee and he worked for Ontario Hydro then, in 1976, they moved to Timmins where he began work with the ONR. Once retired, he had more time to create his traditional crafts and moose hide work. He also practiced his traditional harvesting; hunting, fishing and berry picking. John was a very humorous man and loved to pull pranks on his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Remembrance donations to the Quilts for Survivors would be greatly appreciated and can be made by cheque at the funeral home or by EMT or Pay Pal to vanessa@quiltsforsurvivors.ca. Funeral service will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024 at 1:30pm in the funeral home chapel. Interment at the Timmins Memorial Cemetery. There will be a feast at the Timmins Native Friendship Centre following the interment at the cemetery. The family will receive family and friends from 11:00am to 1:15pm on Friday, February 23, 2024 at the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, Cremation and Reception Centre, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins.
