It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Garfield Claude Bowker at the age of 85, at Extendicare Timmins on Saturday, November 18, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Toronto Garfield was adopted in May 1939 by Kathryn (Kanerva) and Claude Bowker. He grew up at the Buffalo Ankerite Mine, where his father worked and was close to his grandparents in Schumacher. He later moved to Capreol, Hornpayne and Toronto, where he worked for TD bank. He later settled back in Schumacher and worked for the Ministry of Natural Resources, then as a contractor and later at Feldman’s Lumber.
Garfield married Anne Purdie in October 1975, in Timmins and starting a new life, building a cottage in 1976, which led to a great life in Barbers Bay and Connaught, with several good friends and visits from family down south.
Due to health Garfield had to move from his long-time home in Schumacher to St. Mary’s Garden in 2022 and then to Extendicare in 2023, where he still had support from the Purdie, Sebalj, Lucyk and Nault families, as well as the new family at St. Mary’s and Extendicare, where he always told friends he would “Make it”.
He is predeceased by his wife Anne (2016), his parents Claude (1986) and Kathryn (Kanerva) (2002) as well as his brother Bruce (2018).
In accordance with Garfield’s wishes, cremation has taken place and LESSARD FUNERAL AND CREMATION CENTRE have been entrusted with the arrangements. A graveside service, followed by interment will take place at a later date.
Garfield expressed his thanks to all who helped care for him these past months.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
