Violet Jackson
March 10, 1920 – October 19, 2023
Violet Madeline Jackson (nee Baxter) passed away peacefully at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, at the age of 103, with her loving family by her side.
Beloved wife of the late Howard Jackson for nearly 75 years. Wonderful mother to Ken (Betty), Harley (Lesley), Shirley (Bruce) Boyce, Wayne (Margot), Sharen (Eugene) Heath and Linda. Proud grandmother of thirteen, great-grandmother of twenty-two and great-great-grandmother of two. Loving sister of Bud Baxter. Predeceased by her husband Howard (2012), her grandson Reagan Heath (2001), her daughter-in-law Betty (Gillett) Jackson (2012) and three brothers and four sisters.
All of Violet’s ancestral families arrived in Dereham Township before 1850. These family names are Baxter, Huffman, Sanderson, Pearson, Scott, Boyer, Hyatt, McArthur, Wright, Bannister, Adamson and Dodgson.
Violet was born in Dereham Township at the home of her grandparents, George and Ella (Wright) Scott, and she lived her entire life in the Tillsonburg area. She was the eldest daughter of Harry and Nora Bell (Scott) Baxter in a family of nine. By the age of 11 she was working in tobacco on the farm of Leam and Nellie Fick in Fairground to help support her family.
Violet and Howard were married on December 25, 1937 by Reverend Carr in the parsonage of the First Baptist Church in Tillsonburg. She had five children by the age of twenty-two and had her sixth child at the age of twenty-six. She was also working while raising their six young children. She again worked in tobacco but on the Hickory Hills farm owned by Howard’s father William Jackson.
Violet supported the community in many ways including volunteering at the hospital auxiliary, being a Brownie/Guide leader and being a Sunday School teacher.
Violet was an amazing lady in her own quiet way. She had a remarkable memory and she was calm, generous, supportive, loyal and friendly. She also had a great sense of humour! For example, while picking up the Tillsonburg News in January 2016 she offered: “Now, I want to see if anyone died that I know. See if I died.”
Violet’s favourite television programs were Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She enjoyed bowling, crossword puzzles and quilting. All of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have received one of her beautiful quilts. Violet also loved nothing more than spending time with babies and small children.
Violet loved to get dressed up for any occasion. This was particularly true on the occasion of her 100th birthday party where she was no shrinking violet. Indeed, Violet was reveling in being the life of the party with more than 200 friends and relatives who were helping her celebrate.
Our family is thankful that Mom was able to remain in her own home with Linda for so many years.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Lamb, the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital caring staff and Reverend Karlene.
Violet will be forever cherished by all who knew her.
At the request of Violet, cremation has taken place.
