It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of Maria “Mary” Freda Virag, on
Monday, September 9, 2024, age 86, at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital.
Predeceased by her loving husband, George (August 18, 2024). Loving mother to her sons,
George Jr. and David. Predeceased by her parents, Frank and Katharine (nee Theisz).
Predeceased by her brothers, Anthony (“Tony”) and his wife, Anne; Frank Jr. and his wife,
Elizabeth; Joseph; Carl and his partner, Evelyn; Jacob and his wife, Rosemary. Predeceased
by her brothers-in-law, Michael Virag and his wife, Lenke (nee Barto), and John Kardos. Dear
sister-in-law of Helen Kardos and Irene Spohn, both of Tillsonburg. Loving aunt to many nieces
and nephews.
Mary was a proud long-time employee of the Bank of Montreal in Simcoe and in Tillsonburg,
and a very active member of the CWL, where she held positions of Treasurer and Recording
Secretary. Always eager to spend time with those she held dear, she enjoyed playing games
with her family and friends, be it euchre, bridge or bowling. As a true matriarch in her family,
Mary was always very loving to her family and friends. All who knew her felt she was so loving
and very organized.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital for their care
and compassion.
Family will receive friends and relatives at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell St.,
Tillsonburg, 519-842-5221 on Monday, September 16, 2024, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm, with CWL
prayers to be held at 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Roman
Catholic Church in Tillsonburg on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at 11:00 am. Interment will be
at the Tillsonburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Tillsonburg District Memorial
Hospital Foundation would be appreciated and may be made directly with the charity or through
the funeral home.
