It is with great sadness the family of Taina Tuulikki Elonen announce the peaceful passing of our wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother on Sunday December 8, 2024.
Taina was born on October 13, 2024, in Kokkola, Finland. She was the youngest of 13 children. She was in the hospital in Kokkola, the only one of her siblings to be born in the hospital – all the rest were born in the sauna.
She grew up on the farm which was 20km from Kokkola, in the small town of Marikainen. She lived through the second World War and met her first husband Alpo Leskela. The came to Canada in 1957 to Port Arthur, and started a new life. They had a child, Tuula in 1960. They lived a good life until Alpo unexpectedly passed away in November 1967.
Taina met Arto Elonen a few years later and they married in 1974. She attended school, learned to speak English, then began working as an Air Canada reservation agent, for 25 years.
She was very active in our local Finnish community. She and Arto built two beautiful homes together. They also travelled a lot and enjoyed several cruise vacations. She and Arto took one last trip to Finland in July of this year, where she was able to see her one surviving sibling, Jorma Sinko, as well as other relatives and friends.
Taina and Arto celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.
She was also a devout member of Hilldale Lutheran Church and sang for the church choir for many years, up until her passing.
She is survived by her husband Arto, daughter Tuula Melo (Bryan), stepchildren Tiina Elonen (Finland), Peter, grandchildren Lisa Turega (Joel), Shane Kay (Laura), step grandchildren Heidi Tiainen (Kayla) and Markko Tiainen (Finland), great grandchildren Mady, Kenzie, Chloe and Noah, as well as her one surviving sibling Jorma Sinko (Finland), and many nieces and nephews.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the medical staff of Thunder Bay Regional 2C and St. Joe’s Hospice 4 North.
Cremation has taken place as per Taina’s wishes. A private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hilldale Lutheran Church.
Arrangements are in care of Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.
