Richard Dampier
The family of Richard Dampier is saddened to announce his passing on October 1, 2024 after a battle with cancer.
Richard was born on April 29, 1953 in Thunder Bay to the late Henry and Devona (nee Gerow) Dampier. He was the third youngest of four children. Two preceded him in death (Devona Trabbish and Randy Dampier).
Richard, fondly known as “Wire” to his friends and “Grampy” to his grandkids, grew up exploring his hometown of Nipigon and area and developed a love of the outdoors that lasted his lifetime. As a young man, he worked as a beach comber and then he worked on his family’s boat “The Pelican“ commercial fishing. He later worked in the Domtar Mill and then as a truck driver for Domtar for many years. He was most proud when he became self-employed as “Rick Dampier Trucking”. He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing in the Nipigon area with family and friends. He was known to have a fun, competitive nature. He loved to organize games when camping, whether it was lawn bowling with logs for pins and a real bowling ball, knife throwing at targets or scavenger hunts, there was always a competitive game going on with his name written all over it. He enjoyed playing pool throughout his life and in his later years, he played at the 55 Plus Centre with his friends. He enjoyed riding his e-bike and flying his drone to capture beautiful photographs and videos of nature that he liked sharing with his family. He also really loved to watch many different sports on his big screen tv in the company of his beloved fur baby Pippi. He would often say that the only way that he could be better is if the Blue Jays win tonight.
Richard is survived by daughters Amanda Dahl of Vancouver, Corinna Dampier (and Wayne Boulter) of Red Rock and his best friend and lifelong adventure buddy, his son Henry (and Crystal) Dampier of Thunder Bay; grandchildren Hanna, Jackson, Noah, Julia, Adam, Aiden and his main man Ashton, aka “Ashton Magashton”; his sister Geneva Nichols; and his dear friend Hank Post.
A private celebration of life has taken place in accordance with Richard’s wishes. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central
Avenue, Thunder Bay.
