Myrtle Korkola
Myrtle (Mert) Elizabeth Korkola 77, passed away peacefully on December 9th, 2024.
surrounded by her loving family. Born in Port Arthur, ON, on February 20th, 1947, Mert
lived a life full of love and laughter.
Mert’s professional life was distinguished by her dedicated service at APPLE Credit
Union, where she worked as a loans officer until her retirement in 2011. Her greatest
joy, however, was found in her family and her friendships. Her love story with her late
husband Bob was one of partnership and shared adventures. They shared a love for car
racing and spent many years together pursuing this passion alongside close friends and
family. Her love of the outdoors led her to enjoy camping and fishing, particularly at
Sowden Lake, where she created lasting memories with her family and friends and
found a true piece of paradise. She found great joy in playing bingo throughout her life,
as well as enjoying card games and other pastimes with her lifelong friends.
She was grateful for the opportunity to travel with her family to many unforgettable
destinations, including Las Vegas, Mt. Rushmore, the Caribbean, Nashville, Hawaii, and
on several memorable cruises.
Her family was her greatest treasure. She is survived by her daughter Sherri (Todd)
Krywy, son Dale (Diana) Korkola, and grandchildren Justin Krywy (Jennifer), Kaitlyn
Krywy, and Dana Korkola. She is also lovingly remembered by her partner, Graham
Smith, and his family, who meant so much to her. Myrtle leaves behind numerous close
friends and extended family, all of whom were touched by her warmth, kindness, and
infectious spirit. Mert was predeceased by her husband Bob Korkola, her parents
Thelma and Ted Oinonen, and her brother Ervin Oinonen.
Myrtle will be remembered for her heartfelt, handwritten cards that often brought tears to
the eyes of those who received them. She had a witty sense of humor and was always
full of life, looking out for others with a love and warmth that knew no bounds. Mert’s
laughter and love for her family and friends were constants in her life, and she will be
deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Myrtle lived with true Finnish
SISU – a spirit of determination and resilience. She faced life’s challenges with grace
and brought joy to everyone around her
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Canadian Cancer Society,
Humane Society, or a charity of choice. As per Mert’s wishes, there will be no formal
service. Instead, she would encourage everyone to cherish their loved ones and
raise a toast in her honour.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Thunder Bay Regional Health
Sciences Centre for their exceptional care and support during Mert’s final weeks.
Mert’s journey may have ended, but her love, laughter, and memories will forever live in
the hearts of those who knew her.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
