It is with profound sadness that the family of Drema Beaver announced her unexpected passing on Wednesday, July 18, 2024, in Thunder Bay at the age of 21.Drema was born in Thunder Bay on August 19, 2002, to Susan Beaver and Bernie Wabasse. She lived between Summer Beaver (Nibinamik First Nation) and Thunder Bay for most of her life.
From an early age, Drema led a wild and excitable life. She loved to climb and jump around anywhere she could, from the couch to the bed to the small shed outside her family home in Summer Beaver. “Mom, look!” she shouted from the shed’s roof. “Dree!” her mother yelled, “Get down!” There were many instances where her mother was so startled by Drema’s shenanigans that she could not finish saying Drema’s name. So, she nicknamed her “Dree” while her other family members would call her “Monkey.” Her favourite activity as a child was to sit on a rock by the shore and impersonate Ariel from The Little Mermaid.
Drema had a sensitive heart and a compassionate spirit. She respected her elders in Summer Beaver by taking on any task they asked her to do, like cleaning. Her great-grandparent Jane Beaver said this was the first time the elders noticed a young person as caring and delicate as she was towards them. She adored any babies and children she encountered and enjoyed playing with them and making them laugh. Drema loved her fur babies Milo and Nova and her fur nephews Ginger and Thunder. She cherished any animal, whether a stray cat, a rez dog or a small animal. She genuinely cared for the less fortunate in any way she could. In the winter, Drema begged her mother to buy a hot coffee for those standing in the cold.
Drema’s strong sense of justice sometimes clashed with those around her. She quickly challenged a person’s words, actions, and beliefs if she felt wronged or if her loved ones were hurt by them. Sometimes, people were irritated by her honesty and outspokenness, yet she was true to her unapologetic self. In good and bad times, Drema fought fiercely for love.
Recently, Drema graduated with her high school diploma and applied to the Social Service Worker and Onajigawin Indigenous Services program at Confederation College. She later jumped for joy after she received the good news of her acceptance into both programs. In her last days,Drema was light-hearted and full of hope for her future. The specialmemories made with her will live on in our hearts forever.
Drema will bedeeply missed by her mother, Susan; her father, Bernie; hergodparents, Jolene Neshinapaise, Ricky and Carol Yellowhead; her siblings, Bearkwon and Timonte Wabasse; her first cousins but more like siblings, Lucas Friday-Beaver and Clover Beaver; her great-grandparent, Jane Beaver; her grandparent, Judas Beaver; her aunt, Geraldine Beaver; her uncles, Steven and Benjamin Beaver; and many extended family on both sides.
She was predeceased by the Late Elsie Beaver (Grandmother), Simon Beaver Jr.(Great Grandparent), Keegan Beaver (Cousin), and Tianna Meekis (Cousin).
A service to remember and honour Drema will be held on July 25 at 1 pm, with visitation at noon, in the Everest Waverley Chapel, 299 Waverley Street.
Immediately following the service, Drema will return to Summer Beaver to her final resting place.
