Mrs. Maria Bitonte (nee Conforti), age 103, passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
Maria was born October 9th, 1921 in Paterno Calabro, provincia di Cosenza, Calabria, Italy. She grew up in the family home at I Merendi and was the oldest of 7 children. Maria married Santo Bitonte in 1945, and they welcomed 5 beautiful children into their home. In 1961, she immigrated to Canada, with her children, to join
her husband Santo in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Maria was a dedicated homemaker and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family. She could always be found in the kitchen preparing for the next meal, ensuring no one ever went hungry, or tending house, keeping a spotless home where you never dared wear your shoes inside. Right until her final days, Maria enjoyed having visitors for coffee and desserts, and looked forward to her daily phone calls, keeping in touch with family and friends near and far.
Maria is survived by her children Ida (Sal) Vetere, Luciano (Cindy Backen), Franca (Patrizio) Di Antonio, and daughter-in-law Sue Bitonte. Grandchildren Vince and Claudio Vetere, Santo Bitonte, Matthew (Tara) Bitonte, Melinda Di Antonio, Alana (Luigi) Valente, Michelle (Benjamin) Kash, Andraya (Scott Bergson) Bitonte, Joshua Bitonte, William, and 7 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Francesco and Mario Conforti, sister-in-laws Maria Conforti, Rosina Bitonte, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband Santo, children Bruno and Vincenzo Bitonte, parents Angelina Mariano and Antonio Conforti, mother and father-in-law Maria Ardente and Bruno Bitonte, siblings Esterina Romito, Giuseppina, lolanda, and Pietro Conforti, sister-in-laws Enza and Rosetta Conforti, Teresa Arno, Amalia, Elena, Carmela, Elvira Bitonte, brother-in-laws Pietro Bitonte, Mario Settembrino, Nardo Bitonte, Michele Arno, Francesco Barone, Giovanni Beltrano, and Ernesto Romito.
We would like to thank everyone involved in her care especially Dr. Scali, Dr. Ward, Dr. Pynn, Dr. Mauro, Meagan Ross, NP and the home-care staff who kept Maria comfortable at home as per her final wishes.
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Maria Bitonte will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church with the funeral mass commencing at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at 10:00 A.M. in the church. A private entombment will take place in Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum in St. Andrew’s Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
