Elizabeth MacKay passed away at the age of 84 on December 8, 2023. Betty had been battling poor health for the past while and was unable to rally this time, as she had done many times before.
Betty was a nurse and mid wife during her long career, mostly spent at McKellar Hospital. She took great pride in her career – even after retirement, she loved to pick up a “wee shift” here and there to get back into it. Betty’s favorite things to do were reading, knitting and spending time at the cottage. You would never see Betty without her knitting bag close by. She truly loved to knit outfits for her numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews from Scotland to Calgary. Betty was a devout Catholic who hardly missed a Saturday Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Betty or “Kelly,” as many called her, enjoyed visiting and hosting parties and gatherings for us all. The Boxing Day parties were legendary. Later in life, nothing would light up her face more than visits from her numerous friends and family and news about the new babies.
Betty was predeceased by her parents Jack and Bridget Kelly, husband Edward, sisters Margret, Ann, Teresa, brothers James, and John. As well as sisters in-law Mary, Rose and brothers-in-law Bert, Jack, Park and Pat.
Survived by sisters-in-law Linda, Vicki and Janet, and numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved godsons.
Betty was a loving wife and dear friend. We will all miss her.
A graveside service at Riverside Cemetery with a reception in her honour will be announced in the spring of 2024.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre in Betty’s memory would be sincerely appreciated.
