Arne Hirslund passed away peacefully with his family present on Thursday, May 9th, 2024, at the age of 91.
He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on May 7, 1933 and came to Canada at the age of 19. He settled temporarily in Toronto, working in construction. There he met Lorna (Matheson), and they were married June 8, 1957 in Thunder Bay (Port Arthur) and raised their family. For a short time he operated a Service Station, and was later employed by Lakehead University Maintenance Department. He then started his own construction business, which continued successfully until his retirement.
Ame made many friends over his life. As a young man, he enjoyed playing tennis at Kew Beach Tennis Club in Toronto. After retirement, Arne curled two days a week in the Loose Ends League at the Port Arthur Curling Club for 25 years. A talented, self-taught musician, Arne played the Chromatic Harmonica, and enjoyed many years volunteering with musical partners entertaining at many Seniors Residences and at the Jam Sessions.
Arne is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lorna, his 3 daughters: Shelley Hirslund (Rob Evering), Colleen Hirslund (Scott Ranney), Audrey (Robert Cowall), his son Andy (Karen) Hirslund, his 4 granddaughters, and his great-grandson.
In accordance with Arne’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and no funeral or memorial service will be held. Should friends desire, memorial donations to the Salvation Army, The Dew Drop Inn or a charity of choice would be appreciated. Condolences may be expressed at www.sargentandson.com.
