With heavy hearts and immense gratitude for her life on this earth, the family of Arlene Slipperjack announces her passing on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
Arlene was born on April 6, 1950 in Whitewater Lake to Albert and Daisy Slipperjack. Arlene and her siblings were residential school survivors – these traumatic experiences she endured as a small child solidified her lifelong passion and never-ending advocacy work for her homeland and community.
Arlene enjoyed life to the fullest. You could often find her listening to George Strait, Elvis, or other country artists, doing her signature dance, wearing a big grin. She got the chance to travel to Las Vegas numerous times; it was a highlight for her to get dressed up in all her bling, see shows and concerts, and play games. She loved to go out to her favorite fishing spots in the nearby lakes to see what was biting that day. In her earlier years she was a curler, and her love of watching sports remained constant. Her family knew that if there was a game of hockey, curling, or baseball on TV, she would be parked just inches away from the screen, carefully watching each move and cheering on her teams. She never turned down a meal at Dairy Queen, freshly-made bannock, or a slice of blueberry pie.
Arlene was the caretaker of the family. It made her heart happy to check in on others, help nurse them back to health, and simply spend time with them. Even through her own health issues, she always asked how others were doing. She was tough, stubborn, and fought for what she believed in, but she was also compassionate, selfless, and kind. Her smile, her words of wisdom, and her resilience will always be remembered.
Arlene is lovingly remembered by her three children Pauline (Mike), Doreen (Dale), and Albert and their father Robert (Avis); eight grandchildren Andrea, Kylie, Johnny, Kyle, Cameron, Josh, Carson, and Emily; three great grandchildren Maddy, Isabella, and Antonio; siblings Lena, Ruby (Patrick), Shirley, and Sam; numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and extended family whom she loved dearly.
She was predeceased by her parents Daisy and Albert, siblings Stanley, Nancy, Walter, and Clara; grandson Robert; and partner & best friend Bill.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, October 12, at 9:30 a.m. at Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel. She will be laid to rest in a private interment service in her homeland in Whitewater Lake.
