A poem written by Wilf: Trails End
Rolling back the years of memories in my mind,
Many trails I have travelled, like a comet dust and snow trailing far behind.
From Halifax to Vancouver to the Gulf of Mexico,
On roads of ice, under Northern Lights where its 40 Below.
I’ve seen the tides of Bay of Fundy, Great Lakes of Ontario, watched grain fields on the prairies grow, where the wind never stops to blow.
Rolling past oil wells, cattle grazing in Alberta, across the mountains to the Pacific shore.
Cherish hugs from my children when they meet me at the door.
Worked at factories, sawmills, fishing lodge, bailed hay, milked cows by hand, worked with horses on my father’s land.
The highway of life is long and hard with many a winding turn.
Out here alone, miss my wife and children.
To be with them I always yearn.
When I am called to cross the great divide to rest my weary soul and drive that final mile,
I’ll roll through heaven’s gate to meet my savior with open arms and a smile.
Scatter my ashes so I may travel still,
As dust in the wind from every hill.
And if ever a speck of dust lands in your eye and brings a tear,
Remember its only me, always nearby.
I’ll always come back again, a soft kiss on your cheek, as a drop of summer rain.
For I haven’t gone, but I will remain.
I’ll always come back again and again and again.
