Richard Banning Hartley July 3, 1946 to August 14, 2024
Richard was born in Dartmouth NS to Kathleen and Lawrence Hartley on July 3rd, 1946. He had 3 older siblings and 2 younger.
His love of life didn’t come to an end with his death. Richard passed away at the age of 78 on August 14, 2024 after an intense battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones in his last days, who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
Richard met the love of his life Wendy in March 1967 on a blind date. It was right after he was discharged from the army. It was love at first sight as they were married 6 weeks after that meeting. 10 months after that day they welcomed their first son Donald. 2 years after that they had Rodney, and 2 years later they completed their family with their 3rd son Warren. Richard and Wendy had always wanted daughters, and in 1992 they got their first one when Rodney married Cindy. Don married Michele in 1994 and in 1997 Warren married their 3rd daughter in law, Karen.
Richard and Wendy both wanted grandchildren. They REALLY wanted grandchildren. They were ecstatic when they started arriving. And arriving! They kept on arriving until they had 10 grandkids.
Some of the simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Richard. His love of gardening has been much discussed over the years and passed down to his children and grandchildren. We have found some of the seeds he kept of his giant pumpkin and will be planting them in his honour. Richard has 4 great grandchildren so far and they are at the age when Richard started sharing his love of gardening with his grandsons. Their parents will continue the legacy of the Great Pumpkin.
Family meant everything to Richard. He had many a story to tell everyone about his boys and then his boys’ boys (and girls). Over his life time, he was a soldier, a miner, a hunter, a trapper, a truck driver. But most of all, Richard was a great role model and someone anyone could go to for help and advice. He will be missed by all that knew him.
Richard leaves behind his wife Wendy (nee Warren), His sons Donald (Michele), Rodney (Cindy) and Warren (Karen). His grandchildren Rachel, Ben, Aaron, Caleb, Joseph, Trevis, Colby, Jordan, Lucas and Lily. And his great-grandchildren Anastasia, Jorah, Kaden and Mia. His brother Danny (Donna), his sisters Janet (Donald), Doris (Joe) and Cindy (Brian) and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Kathleen and Lawrence Hartley, his stepfather Lawrence Chandler, his brother Kenny and sister in law Betty.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Maison McCulloch Hospice in his memory.
