Kathleen Shannon 1953 -2024
Kathleen passed away at her home, in her favourite chair, following a prolonged illness. She was 71 years old. Kathleen, or Kathy with a K as she used to say was a true northerner having been born in Couchenour Ontario and raised in Burwash where her father was a stationary engineer. She was the daughter of Leonard and Iva Shannon (predeceased) and sister to brothers Dennis (Jane) and Patrick (Linda). She was also aunt (the fun aunt!) to Luke, Haley, Jessica and Matthew.
Kathy had a son, Lenny, whom she loved with all her heart. Lenny was at the center of her world.
Kathy was always a free spirit with a generous heart. She loved to have fun and she loved to laugh. She could not be mean to anyone. Kathy also had a flair for the dramatic, an artist’s eye for fashion and art, and strong opinions on just about everything. Kathy had many adventures with brother Patrick, and brother Dennis always made sure she had a great car to drive and a helping hand whenever she called. Books were an intrinsic part of her life and she spent more than her share fair of time at Bays Used Books wandering the shelves.
But she had her troubles in life and she felt them deeply. Sometimes they swamped her and wore away at that generous heart of hers. Her life in later years became less open, more introverted, but it still had space for family and friends. She shared a special bond with her dear friend Marge who always kept watch over Kathy.
Kathy loved the water and felt at home in it. That led her to become a very popular certified aqua fitness instructor at a number of pools in the city. Later in life she chose a different path when she became a medical secretary and went to work at the offices of Dr. Garrioch until she retired. There she was very well regarded by both staff and patients. She was not only conscientious and efficient at her job; Kathy often went beyond her duties to reach out with empathy and concern to patients. Kathy was a person who really cared.
As per Kathy’s wishes there will be no visitation or service. A private family funeral will be held at a later date. And so, may she, Kathy with a K, Kate to some, rest in in a great and natural peace and may she be held with tenderness and love in the hollow of the hand that holds all things.
