It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Carolyn Jean Sinclair (née Werry) on November 17, 2024 at the age of 80. Carolyn was born on March 26, 1944, in Bowmanville, Ontario, to George and Jean Werry. She was a loving older sister to Don (Barb) and James (Jennifer) Werry, and an adored aunt to their children.
Carolyn’s life was defined by love, learning, and service. She was a devoted wife of 55 years to MacGregor Sinclair, and a proud mother to Ian (Sara) and James (Amy). She cherished her grandchildren Julia, John, Mackie, and Keaton, and was a beloved sister-in-law, aunt, and friend to many.
Carolyn was a woman of many passions and talents. Equally at home gardening in the yard, practicing tai chi, teaching Sunday school at church, knitting blankets for new family members, playing piano, or leading board meetings, she brought joy, passion, and purpose to everything she did. Her legendary chocolate chip cookies were a particular favorite, as she balanced the practical and creative in every aspect of her life.
Carolyn attended the University of Toronto, where she earned an English degree and also met Mac. She became an English teacher, working at Sudbury High School after she and Mac had married.
A lifelong learner, Carolyn returned to university later in life earning an undergraduate degree in French and a Master of Arts in Humanities (in French), both at Laurentian University. She was awarded the Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal in 2004 as top graduate student at Laurentian University, as well as the Governor General’s Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for community involvement. She was proud of her accomplishments and found deep joy in the pursuit of language and learning about Franco-Ontario culture.
Carolyn was a member of St. Peter’s United Church, where she found spiritual nourishment and belonging, and enjoyed looking after the youngest church members in the nursery. Her commitment to helping others extended across the community, as she dedicated time to a variety of causes. Over the years she taught English as a second language, was a volunteer fitness instructor at the YMCA, canvassed and organized for the Canadian Cancer Society, and served on several boards, including those of the Trillium Foundation, Laurentian University (serving as Board Chair from 2007 to 2010), the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and the Théâtre du Nouvel Ontario.
Carolyn’s unwavering devotion to her community and her family leaves an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her kindness, generosity, and vitality will be greatly missed.
