It is with heavy hearts that the family of Donald announces his passing in Azilda on Sunday, May 19 at the age of
74. Donald is the son of the Late Ludger (Leo) Gagne and the late Reine- Marguerite (nee Martin) of Timmins.
Donald has left to mourn the love of his life and his spouse of 53 years, Monique Aubin as well as his sons Alain (Kim Riopelle), Daniel, Pierre (Jo Anne Parent), Jean-Michel (Nicole Lussier) and his daughter Linda (Greg Wellbanks). Also left to mourn him are his grandchildren: Alisanne, Hailey, Gabriel, Gavin, Nathaniel, Madeleine, Jackson, Germain, Samuel, Bernadette, Joseph, Nicholas, Alexa, Melodie, and Ethan.
Donald was also predeceased by his brothers Marc and Michel; his father- in-law, Reverend Raymond Aubin; his
sister-in-law Colette and her husband Larry Risewick. He leaves to mourn his sister Louise Mackey (Ken), his brother Robert Gagne, his sister-in-law Barbara Pitt, his mother-in-law Irene Aubin (nee Major), his sister-in-law Alice Lacroix (Gerald), his brother-in-law Richard Aubin (Linda), his sister-in-law Lise Aubin, and his sister-in-law Viviane Regimbal (Daniel). Also left to mourn are his Godson Brian Risewick and his Goddaughter Julie and his many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. His family was always close to his heart.
Don was, at the core of his being, a servant. He started his service to the Church as an altar server at the age of six at St- Sauveur Parish in Timmins. He held this responsibility until the age of eighteen. He was also a loyal member of St. John’s Ambulance and worked as an orderly at St. Mary’s Hospital in Timmins.
In 1969, at the age of 20, Donald was hired at St-Jean-de-Brebeuf Hospital in Sturgeon-Falls as an ambulance
supervisor for the hospital’s first ambulance service. After three years in Sturgeon-Falls (where he met and eventually married Monique), Donald’s roots called him back to Timmins where he worked for Yvon Boucher’s Timmins Ambulance Service. He worked for Yvon for another three years until life brought him into another direction. In 1975, Donald started working on the railroad at Texas Gulf where he worked for 20 years before retiring in 1995.
In their years as members of the Diocese of Timmins, Donald and Monique were active as senior facilitators for 13 years in the Engagement Encounter Program. They were also the couple responsible for the Engagement Encounter Program at the National (Canada-East) level. They both took training towards the Permanent Diaconate and were both heavily involved in the Cursillo/ Adggiornamento movements. During the last 13 years in the Diocese of Timmins, Donald would regularly attend the Monteith Correctional Centre where he volunteered as a Catholic Lay-Chaplain for the prisoners. Once Donald and Monique moved to Sudbury- before and since the Covid pandemic- Donald continued serving spiritual needs by acting as Communion Minister as Spiritual Companion at the Pioneer Manor and St- Joseph’s. Donald was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council 11550 at St Agnes Parish in Azilda where he did Readings and gave Communion.
Donald had many interests. He loved working on our farm with his tractor. He loved fishing and spending time at
camp. He loved spending time in his garage building wooden toys for his grand kids. He loved good a conversation and a measure of debate. He loved a good book and loved exploring different corners of the world wide web. As a testament to his faith- from the date of his cancer diagnosis on April 23 of this year, Donald would reassure us that he wasn’t afraid of his death. He knew of the beauty and happiness awaiting him in Heaven- as was promised by his Saviour.
The family wishes to thank Mgr Bob, Father Andre, Father Constantin, Father Perron, Father Thierry and his friend Matthew, Baptist Minister at the Pioneer Manor as well as his special friend Paulette Léger who took the time to bring him Communion and pray with him. Your visits with Dad, and the prayers at his bedside during his last few days with us brought him great comfort.
A big thank you to the following doctors, Dr Sign, Dr Benjelloun, Dr Davidson ,Dr Mailloux, Dr Lepage and Dr
Raymond as well as nurses Erin and Jessica. The Bayshore team, especially his angel Claudette who managed to make him smile during her visits; his dietician, Jenna Cormier; his Occupational Therapist, Jacklyn Upchan; and Home Service Support Coordinator, Courteney Pike, Ashley and the psws who were so kind and patient when helping our Dad. A big thank you to Mr. Collin Bourgeois, owner of Simple Wishes of the North for having allowed us a precious last few minutes to say our farewells to our Dear Dad and Grand-Dad.
Remembrance donations can be made to CHEO, Maison McCullough, Paroisse Sainte-Agnès.
Funeral Mass will be held at St- Agnes Parish in Azilda on May 25, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. The family will be receiving
family and friends at the Church at 10:00 am.
Interment of Donald’s remains will be held at the Field Cemetery on June 29, 2024.
