Neil Cheney Obituary
The family of Neil (Nick, Niles) Richard Cheney are devastated to announce his sudden passing on April 14, 2024. Born in Stratford, son of the late Stuart and Vivian Cheney.
Best friend and loving husband of 52 year to Carol (Hood). The best and most supportive father to Erin and Gustavo, Geoff and Rebecca. Proud yaya to Luciana, Hendrick and Vivienne. Brother to Janne Burton, Kirk Cheney and Chris Brennan. Brother-in-law of Roberta and Lloyd Vandenberg, Jo-Anne and John Hood-Tidman, and Jim Brennan. Loving nephew of Morley Whitham and cousin to Lyn Whitham (Stan Behal) and Ben Whitham (Michelle). Neil deeply valued his relationships with his nieces and nephews and their families. To Neil friends were immensely important and he was so grateful to have so many from across generations and geographies.
Predeceased by brother-in-law Ross Monk.
We are tremendously saddened by the sudden loss of such a wonderful man.
Neil worked for 41 seasons at the Stratford Festival retiring as head of scenic carpentry in 2015. His creativity showed no bounds at work and at home. Art and the artform reflected in his many car drawings, dioramas and models – of which there were many. His passion for cars began early in childhood with big brother Kirk leading him down the path of no return. His encyclopedic brain for cars was unmatched with every memory or story including a car reference. A trip to Italy with Carol included a stop in Maranello where he drove his beloved Ferrari.
Neil was a selfless problem solver. He didn’t think twice if you asked him to help. And his solutions were often unique as “macgyverinig” was a fulltime hobby.
He always welcomed you with a big smile and a hug and jokes were never far behind. He could cut a rug like no other never shying away from a dance floor. You knew you were going to have a good time if Neil was in the mix!
He took great pride in cheering on his grandchildren and their respective teams: Forest City Volleyball Club, Stratford Warriors, Stratford Aces.
A celebration of life reminiscent of those scene shop parties is planned for Sunday May 5th from 2 – 5 pm at the Paul D. Fleck Marquee, Festival Theatre.
