Obituary of Vasilije Stoyakovich
September 11, 1926 ~ May 4, 2024
In loving memory of Vasilije (Vaso) Stoyakovich, who passed away peacefully on May 4, 2024, at the age of 97, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience and strength.
Vaso is now reunited with his predeceased parents, Petar and Jeka, as well as several siblings. A devoted family man, he is survived by his cherished wife of 66 years, Ljubica, their children, Petar and Olga (Nick), beloved grandchildren Natasha (Preston), Alexis (Rhett), Nicole (Rees), Michael, adored great-grandson Bennett, and relatives in Canada, USA, Serbia, and Australia.
Born on September 11th, 1926, in the village of Radljevac (Knin) in the former Yugoslavia, his life journey was one of determination, perseverance, and commitment to family. Although saddened by his passing, the family is proud to celebrate the long life of Vaso. His unwavering courage and love will continue to inspire all who knew him for generations to come.
Reflecting on Vaso’s early life, he had aspirations for a brighter future, which were abruptly shattered by the outbreak of World War II, that not only disrupted his schooling but thrust him into the heart of conflict for the duration of his adolescence. Despite the interruption caused by the war, he remained determined to pursue his academic endeavours, recognizing their importance in building a stable future for himself and the family he always desired to have.
Demonstrating remarkable resilience, he diligently continued his studies during stays in refugee camps in Italy, later persevering through night classes in England before eventually settling in Canada in 1954. After completing his training in mechanical and structural engineering, he secured a job with Westinghouse (Hamilton) and enjoyed a successful career of 40 years.
A founding member of the Saint Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Cathedral (Nash Rd.), Vaso played a significant role in its development, using his expertise in engineering to design the plans and oversee the construction for the church and hall. Dedicating himself to its growth and community, he was proud to hold various positions within, from Treasurer to Secretary, a teacher for Serbian school, and eventually an elder.
While there is a significant absence left by his departure, his family will always find comfort in fond memories of walks in nature, many shared meals, and four generations enjoying the family home and garden. Though his presence will be deeply missed, his love remains close to heart.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 12, 2024 from 2-4 p.m/ with Pomen at 3:30 p.m. at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek. Funeral Service will be held at St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, 149 Nash Road South, Hamilton on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 11am with the Very Reverend Father Djuro Samac officiating. Interment to take place at Woodland Cemetery.
Donations, if so desired, can be made to St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Cathedral. Notes of condolences and memories may be shared at www.donaldvbrown.ca.
