It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen on October 28th, 2024.
Deeply loved and always remembered as a loving husband of Heather for 30 wonderful years. Proud and loving father to Mark Medley, Vivian Medley (Mike) and Janet Plastow (Fred). Cherished Grandpa to Simon (Isobel) UK, Graham (Bella) Australia, Tessa (Brian) N.B., Lily (Noah) B.C., Michael (Amber) Ontario and Adam (Nicki) Ontario and Great Grandpa to six beautiful great grandchildren Arthur, Peyton, Owen, Winnie, Anna and Sadie). Survived by his sister-in-law Nancy Hatfield-Summers (Late Roy) of Ottawa. Fondly remembered by cousin Mildred Goodson (Late Bob) of Arizona. Predeceased by his parents Stephen and Sadie nee Sarah McCurley and sister Marion (Jim) Hunter of Ottawa.
Stephen was a remarkable man. A third generation Hamiltonian with ancestry from Ireland (mother) and England (father). Many will remember him for his years working for various insurance companies before joining the long established (1918) firm of Jennings Insurance Ltd in Hamilton in 1976. He eventually emerged as president and owner in 1981 until his retirement in 1999. Stephen sat on the advisory committee for RIBO (Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario) and was an active member of the Rotary Club in Hamilton. He was a graduate of McMaster University (BA), Fellow of Insurance Institute of Canada (FIIC) and Chairman of The Hamilton Club (1991-1992). Along with his many professional and community accomplishments, Stephen spent many years as an active member of the Caledon Mountain Trout Club and the Tamahaac Club where he enjoyed skeet shooting and the camaraderie of so many good friends. He loved his shooting and fishing trips to Quebec, New Brunswick, North Wales, Cuba and the Bahamas. Stephen was known for his wonderful sense of humour. His kindness, strength and unwavering love had a profound impact on all of us.
Special thanks to Dr. Paul Hart, Dr. Ian Darcel, Dr. Hun-Je Park and for the extraordinary care from the wonderful staff and volunteers at Carpenter Hospice. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Please consider making a donation in Stephen’s memory to Carpenter Hospice in Burlington.
