Obituary of Helen Kowalla (nee Prischut)
Of Caressant Care on Mary Bucke, St. Thomas, passed away at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the age of 99. Beloved wife of the late Peter Kowalla (1990). Dearly loved mother of Monica Lewis (Ron), Peter Kowalla (Mary), and the late Erwin Kowalla (Lynn). Cherished grandmother of Julie Lewis-Karathanassis (Pete), Ron Lewis, Logan Kowalla, and Nathan Kowalla (Tara). Helen was proud of her great grandchildren, Alex Karathanassis, Kristiana Karathanassis-Linsdell (Geoffrey), Amelia Karathanassis, Natalie Karathanassis, Julian Karathanassis, Jane Lewis-DeVrieze (Evan), Kate Lewis (Garret), Ronnie Lewis, Noah Lewis, Bobby Kowalla, Reese Kowalla, and her great great grandson, Zane. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been predeceased by a number of brothers and sisters.
Born in Olchowka, Kostopol, Poland, November 8, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Nikolei and Paulina (née Himberg) Prischut. Helen formerly worked at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital and the Memorial Hospital, St. Thomas in the housekeeping departments. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, St. Thomas.
A private funeral service will be held at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160), followed by interment in the St. Thomas Cemetery, West Avenue. Flowers respectfully declined. If so desired, please consider a memorial donation to Caressant Care on Mary Bucke (Residents Fund) or Redeemer Lutheran Church.
