Mary Ann Thomas (previously Rowett, nee Monk)
April 2, 1941-June 29, 2024
It is with sadness that we announce that our Mom/Grandma, Mary Ann Thomas died through the night on June 29th.
Born in London, England, Mary emigrated to Canada as a teenager, settling in the Toronto area. Mary married Frank Rowett and they had two children, Lorraine and Carl. Their marriage ended in divorce and in 1974, Mary married William Thomas. On April 6th, 2024, Bill and Mary celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Bill brought two children into the relationship with him, William and Gordon. For much of the 1970s the house was very active with 4 teenagers, three boys and one girl, with only 2 ½ years between the oldest and the youngest. Somehow, Mary was able to establish and maintain a happy, healthy home for her personal version of The Brady Bunch, (Bill’s father also lived in the family home). In December, 1981, after the tragic death of her sister, Carol, Mary went to British Columbia and when she returned home she brought with her her nephew, Shaun who quickly became the youngest of the siblings.
Mary and Bill lived the early years of their marriage in the Niagara Region and bill worked as a ship’s draughtsman at Port Weller Dry Docks. After most of the kids had moved out, the reduced family moved northeast, taking up residence in Hawkesbury and Kanata, Ontario. Eventually, Mary and Bill moved back to St Catharines where they have resided for the last twenty years.
As a single mother, Mary was able to care for herself and her children by working as a Property Manager with the perk of having reduced rent. Later, after her marriage to Bill, Mary studied and worked as a hairdresser and as a Real Estate Agent. When the children had all left the nest, Mary discovered a passion for crafting, particularly creating original stuffed bears. She made and sold bears at many craft markets in the region and gifted an original bear to many of the grandchildren and some of the great-grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her husband, William and her sons Carl (Helen), William (Cheryl), Gordon and, Shaun (Jennifer).
She is also survived by a multitude of grandchildren.
Carl’s children: Leslie, Jennifer and Holly.
Lorraine’s children: TJ and Trevor
William’s children: Maxime, Zoe, Victoria, Liam, Rachael and Olivier.
Gordon’s children: Nancy, Lara, Andrew, Amber, Heather, Charlie, Damian and Edan.
Shaun’s children: Brad, Sarah, Josh and Tyler.
And a number of inlaws and outlaws.
She is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren: Cameron, London, Rory, Keedan, Kayson, Elliot, Sebastien, Julien, Logan, Daniel, Bridgit, Kaylah, Robert, Abigail, Quintin, Hunter, Alexander, Tucker, Poppy and Piper.
and, 1 great-great grandchild: Viola.
Mary was pre-deceased by her mother Beatrice, her brothers John and Gordon, her sister Carol, her daughter Lorraine, her daughter-in-law Rose, her granddaughters Meaghan, Rebecca and Cassie, and her grandson Travis.
The funeral service mourning Mary’s death and celebrating her life will be held at Westminster United Church, 180 Queenston Street in St Catharines on Saturday, July 13th at 10:30. Due to her husband, Bill’s failing health there will be no reception and the family will proceed immediately to Pleasantview Memorial Gardens in Fonthill for inurnment.
