George W. Harris, of Welland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13th, 2024 in St. Catharines, Ontario. He passed away after a long and brave fight that demonstrated George’s intestinal fortitude at the age of 80.
He was born on Dec 2nd, 1943 to George and Florence Harris. Oldest sibling to Patrick (Cathy), Kevin, Debbie and Bonnie (Larry). George was predeceased by his parents and brother Kevin.
George was the very proud and loving father of his 3 boys, Matthew (Lisa), Adam (Audrey) and Zachary. They were his everything. He loved his grand-children Ashton, Maddison, Colin, Lily and Bradley so very much.
George worked hard with over 30 years at Union Carbide, starting in 1964 as a cleanup man, Crush operator, Thread Inspector, Millwright, Head tester, and Control Room operator to name just a few.
George’s sense of adventure likely began with his short service in the Canadian Armed Forces, starting with the local Reserves in the famed Lincoln and Welland Regiment, and ending his career as a medic in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. George loved to travel, with his latest adventure bringing him to visit China for an extended period of time.
For those who knew George, however briefly, found him to be joyful, and full of life. His attitude of never giving up, and fighting to the end have undoubtedly inspired many.
In accordance with George’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no traditional memorial service. Instead, a private gathering of family and friends will be held to celebrate his life at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Passfield Mortuary Services Inc. St. Catharines. If desired, a donation in George’s name to the Canadian Cancer society or the Canadian heart and Stroke foundation would be appreciated by his family.
May his memory bring comfort, solace and some smiles to those who knew and loved him.
