Dunbar, David Keith
FIMarEst. Chartered Engineer (U.K.)
1940 – 2024
It is with great sorrow and shock that we announce the passing of David on Friday June 28 2024. He was the beloved husband of Miriam (Nee Horridge) for almost 59 years. Proud and loving father of Fiona, & Alistair (Rebecca)
He was thrilled to be a Grandad to Jacob, Willem and Kaleb. Left to mourn in England are his sister Angela (David), brother Neil and many nieces’ nephews and cousins
David loved his family and enjoyed reminiscing about his happy life growing up. He loved telling jokes and always saw the best in people. He was a Sea Scout and earned his Queen Scout award. He built his first kayak at age 14. Later he became a Freemason and a Scout Master in England, Montreal and St. Catharines.
He loved sailing and anything to do with the sea and ships.
His chosen Career was at sea where he earned his Chief Engineer’s Qualifications (Motor Vessels and Steam Ships). He made many voyages to the Far East, also Australia and West Africa. He often said he was so fortunate in life to have experienced so many wonderful things.
He came ashore in 1970 and joined Lloyd’s Register of Shipping in Liverpool as a Surveyor. In 1973 he was transferred to Montreal, and then in 1979 to St Catharines. The call of ships and sailing saw him join Upper Lakes Shipping as a Chief Engineer where he stayed until his retirement
Before many health problems arose, he enjoyed long walks, working on projects in the garage and our back garden was graced with the 12 fruit trees and grapes he had espaliered along our fence. Many summer afternoons were spent with family and friends on our patio and swimming in the pool. He loved sailing his sailboat out of Port Dalhousie Pier Marina.
The last few years were difficult for him health wise with many hospitals stays, but he always tried to see the positive side in everything and was always thankful. Even when he had to have dialysis 3 times a week and was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer he was always concerned for others.
The family and I would like to thank everyone who looked after David in any way during his hospital stays. Your compassion and caring means more to us than you can ever begin to imagine. If I mention names, I am sure to omit someone, so know that we are grateful for all.
As per David’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Arrangements have been entrusted to Passfield Mortuary Services Inc. St. Catharines. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
