Robert Kidd Ritchie, PhD (1937-2024)
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Robert Kidd Ritchie on
October 29, 2024.
Known for his remarkable intelligence, sharp wit, and quiet integrity, Bob leaves behind
a legacy of kindness, humility, and a profound love for his family, his native Scotland
and his beloved bagpipes.
Bob is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Doreen, his cherished
children Fiona (Steven), Pamela, and Alison (Andrew), and a large community of family
and friends who will miss his kindness, his humour and the gentle grace with which he
lived his life.
Born on December 22, 1937, in Dundee, Scotland, Bob earned his PhD in chemistry
from the University of St Andrews and moved to Canada initially to complete a post-
doctoral fellowship at the National Research Council (NRC). He then returned to
pursue a distinguished career in the oil and gas industry, and latterly in Scientific
Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED), where he was admired and
respected by all who knew him.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Alicia Gallaccio, the entire
medical and support staff at Joseph Brant Hospital (7 South), the extensive palliative
and home care teams, and finally, the staff and volunteers at Carpenter Hospice for their
compassionate and dedicated care during Bob’s short but intensive illness.
A memorial service to celebrate Bob’s life will be held at Smith’s Funeral Home (1167 Guelph
Line, one stoplight north of the QEW) on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Carpenter Hospice in his honour.
