Patrick Joseph O’Brien, aged 89, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with metastatic cancer and dementia on December 2, 2024. Patrick faced his challenges with unwavering optimism, gratitude, and kindness, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience.
Born to a close-knit family in Bell Island, Newfoundland, Patrick was predeceased by his beloved wife, Frances, his brothers, William and Peter, and his parents Peter and Nellie. Together with Frances, Patrick shared a passion for travel, exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Canada and the United States. He was happiest when surrounded by family, hosting joyous gatherings that brought together his extended family, including his cherished nieces and nephews.
Patrick was a devoted father to his son, Sean, and a loving father-in-law to Danielle. He was a proud and doting grandfather to Caitlin, whose soccer games—whether local or provincial—he attended with boundless enthusiasm. As a young man, Patrick and his teammates won multiple senior hockey championships playing for Bell Island. He was also a lifelong fan of the Montreal Canadiens, cheering on his team with the same passion he brought to everything in life.
Known for his infectious smile and sharp sense of humor, Patrick had a remarkable ability to bring warmth and joy to any room. Even in the face of illness, he maintained his hopeful spirit and deep appreciation for the care and kindness shown to him by others.
Patrick will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered as a kind, generous soul who valued family above all else. His light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
At Patrick’s request, a private burial will take place. A celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honour can be made to any worthy organization supporting cancer or dementia research.
