Vera’s Obituary
Vera Astrid Fairman was born on March 4, 1928, in Battersea SW London, England to Walter Oliver Fairman and Emily Amy Fairman (nee Chandler). She is predeceased by her parents, her siblings (Violet, Walter, Reginald, Albert, and Evelyn) and her estranged husband, Charles Thomas Conroy.
Vera is survived by her three children, David (Linda), Susan (Paul Melanson), Terence (Kristina) and grandchildren: Paul(Kelly), Steven(Brittany), Lindsay(Matt), Ryan, Ronalee(Dan), Amy(Don), Billy(Nicolle), Haley(Riley), Michael(Tiana), Hannah(Adam), Carmen, Grace and T.J., as well as numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and her extended family in Australia and Great Britain.
Vera was an integral part in every one of her grandchildren’s lives, in their formative years and beyond, looking after them all. It is a bond that remained steadfast.
In April of 1929 Vera’s father, mother and the three eldest children emigrated to the U.S. in hopes of making a better life. Vera at age one, and her three-year-old brother, Albert, were left behind and sent to the country to live in Clapham with an aunt and uncle who were preparing to adopt them, until the family returned in May of 1931. The family reunited with the addition of three-month-old Evelyn. For Vera and her brother, it was like meeting their family for the very first time. Vera took on the role of caregiver for her new sister, Evelyn, until Evelyn died unexpectedly, at 4 ½ years old, in Feltham, England. This memory always brought tears to Vera’s eyes as she never knew what her little sister died from and she remembered that day vividly, like it was yesterday. Vera and her family lived through the Battle of Britain during WWII. Through blackouts, gas masks, huddled in a bomb shelter while bombings were going on all around their home; as their own home was hit, she survived many obstacles in life.
She married on June 19, 1948, and emigrated to Canada in August of 1958 with her husband Charles and their son David, aged 6. They joined her sister Violet and her family in Barrie Ontario. Her parents and other siblings emigrated to Australia just nine days prior to Vera’s marriage. Vera worked as a comptroller (management position in accounting and financial reporting) in England, and in Canada her career was 25+ years with Ontario Hydro. Vera also lived in Ear Falls for three years until moving back to Southern Ontario. Being by the lake, or any body of water, was the happiest place on earth for Vera. She liked to listen to instrumental and vocal classical music. She strove to keep inner peace through every trial and tribulation that life threw her way, as her life was not one of ease. Mum strived to live by the words of the “Desiderata” as she believed the world, with all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, was still a beautiful place and that one should strive, always, to be happy.
Mum, you will always be in our hearts as we now must figure out what life is without you physically here. We will always love you. xo
A huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone at Northwood Lodge.
