Helen Marie Peacock (née Pedlingham) was born in Medonte, Simcoe County, daughter of the late Charles and Elsie Pedlingham, sister of the late Genevieve (Albert Freeland), Geoffrey, Peter, and Mary Anne (Roy Miller); beloved wife of Alan (Al) for 70 years, until his death in January 2023; dear mother of John (Beata Talipski) of Sydney, Australia and Janet (Steve Higgins) of Halifax, NS; grandmother of Ben (Nicole) and Laura (Adam Yip); great grandmother of Sari, Rohan, Angus, Lily and Finley.
Helen was a track and field star in high school, leaving home at age 16 to work at the Royal Bank in Barrie. At 18, while making her usual visit to her family’s farm for Sunday supper, she met a young professional forester named Alan Peacock, who was boarding with Helen’s family while he worked with her father at a Department of Lands and Forests tree nursery in Midhurst. Helen and Al married the following year, moving to Midhurst and Angus, where they started a family, then north to Gogama, Kirkland Lake, Chapleau, and eventually back south to Tweed and Bolton.
Upon Alan’s retirement, Helen and Al moved to a farm near his childhood home in Hope Township to start a cut-your-own Christmas tree farm. A sign on the Ganaraska Road greeted families who had often driven great distances: “Alan & Helen Peacock, Growers of Quality Trees.” For twenty years, Alan guided families through the tree plantation while Helen acted as accountant and served hot chocolate and her famous homemade fudge to crowds of happy visitors.
Helen died peacefully at Ed’s House hospice in Cobourg on January 20. In September 2023, she had been diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a mystifying outcome for someone who had smoked only one cigarette in her life, at age 13.
A service to remember Helen will be held at Ross Funeral Chapel in Port Hope on Friday February 2 at 2pm with visiting one hour prior.
