MULHALL, Maureen Therese (Hickey) (1926-2024)
Died peacefully, in her 98th year, at Princess Gardens, Peterborough on March 27, 2024. Predeceased by her beloved husband Vernon in 2019.The family offers their special appreciation to the dedicated caregivers and staff at Princess Gardens over the last five years.
Survived by her children Sheilagh Breskey (Jeffrey), Mary, John (Susan), Michael, and Henry (Cara); grandchildren Michael, Patrick, and Catherine; sister-in-law Vivian McDonough (+John) and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Henry and Katherine (O’Brien) Hickey, sisters Helen Hiland (Edward), Barbara Murray (Richard) and brothers William (Norma) and Reverend John, several brothers- and sisters-in-law and nephews.
Born in Peterborough, Maureen was educated in St. Mary’s Convent School and St. Peter’s High School. Following her attainment of an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto, she completed teacher training at the University of Toronto before returning to St. Peter’s High School from 1949-1955 as the first lay woman on the teaching staff. She guided her five children through St. Peter’s and served on the school’s board of governors in the 1970s and 1980s. With her interest in education, she was an active supporter of the campaign that led to the establishment of Trent University in the early 1960s. A lifelong member of the Catholic Women’s League, Maureen was also a founding member of the Peterborough Chapter of Birthright.
Visitation at Highland Park Funeral Centre, 2510 Bensfort Road, Peterborough on April 4, 2024 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 pm (Parish Prayers at 7:00). Funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral of St Peter-in-Chains, 411 Reid St., Peterborough on Friday April 5, 2024, at 2:00 pm, the Most Reverend Michael Mulhall, Archbishop of Kingston, officiating. Interment to follow at St Peter’s Cemetery. Please say a prayer or offer a Mass for the repose of Maureen’s soul. Requiescat in pace.
