Louise Iolene Seim (nee Love)
July 1st, 1928 – November 18th, 2023
It is with sadness the family of Louise Iolene Seim announces her passing away the evening of Saturday November 18th. Predeceased by her husband Harold, Louise is survived by her three brothers, John, Lyle (Isabelle), Gordon (Shirley) and her sister, Jean (Edward); by her sons and daughters-in-law Ken and Janet, and Glenn and Sharon, her grandchildren, Derek (Julie), Cheryl (Eric) and Michael and by her great-grandchildren, Emma, Abigail, Keith, Austin, Zachary, and Faith. She is also mourned by her many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Louise was born July 1st, 1928, in West Williams Twp., Ontario. She grew up during the Great Depression and 2nd World War in various communities in southwestern Ontario. Eventually, she and her family moved to Hanover. Louise met Harold in childhood and became sweethearts in high school. They married, on her birthday in 1952. Harold, a wise man, always arranged for large fireworks shows to celebrate their combined birthday and anniversary. Their boys, Ken and Glenn were born in Hanover.
Moving to London, then to Ottawa, and, upon Harold’s retirement, back to Hanover, they made many lifelong friends. Louise became known for her skills in the kitchen, organizing large banquets at the churches they attended. She also became skilled at cake decorating. She made wedding cakes for both Ken and Janet, and Glenn and Sharon, and for several of her beloved nieces, and nephews. Moving these cakes from home to the wedding venue (almost 1400 km to Thunder Bay for Glenn and Sharon’s wedding) was a veritable demonstration packing skills and good driving habits.
Family was extremely important to both Louise and Harold. Over the years, they enjoyed many extended family Christmas celebration, vacations, and reunions. They enjoyed adventures together traveling abroad with Lyle and Isabelle and with John and Beatrice. They also made many trips to northwestern Ontario to visit with Ken and Janet in Red Lake and Glenn and Sharon in Sioux Lookout.
A few years after Harold’s passing in 2008, and as dementia started its slow progress, Louise moved to Peterborough so that she could be closer to Ken and Janet. There, enjoyed many (weekly) family dinners at their place. Between those dinners and travelling north to Cochrane and Timmins, Louise got to know and enjoy time with her six great-grandchildren who knew her as GG.
Eventually, Louise needed more and more assistance, and fortunately moved to Extendicare in Lakefield where her Janet worked as a nurse. Janet made sure that she was well cared for through to and after her retirement. Louise passed peacefully with Janet at her side listening to a favorite hymn.
A Celebration of Life will occur at Northminster United Church (300 Sunset Blvd, Peterborough ON) on December 28, 2023 starting at11:30 a.m. Donations in memory of Louise may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the Rotary Foundation, the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation or Northminster United Church (Peterborough).
