George Nader, 84, of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, passed away on 22 October 2024. Born on 19 January 1940 in Port of Spain, Trinidad, Dr. Nader was a respected academic in the field of Urban Geography. George came from a large family, and family and community were always the most important part of his life.
Dr. Nader earned his PhD from Durham University, in England, where he met the love of his life, his wife, Catherine. He joined Trent University in July 1970, as an assistant professor of Geography, becoming an associate professor in 1973, and a full professor in 1980. George served as associate dean and director of Julian Blackburn College before being appointed principal of Peter Robinson College in 1997, a position he held until his retirement in 2005. He authored many articles as well as three books — two on Canadian cities, and a third about the history of the Syrian-Lebanese community in Trinidad. He was passionate in his defense of his fellow academics, and in 2014, he received the John Fekete Award for services to the Trent University Faculty Association.
George is survived by his wife, Catherine, his much-loved daughters Joanna (Jurriën) and Rebecca (Pat), granddaughters Aisha and Jenna, sisters Marie, Antoinette, and Josephine, and brother Zack. He was predeceased by his son Matthew and sisters Camely, Gemma, and Nora, and brothers Lawrence and Joe.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
