Auntie Doreen was an amazing light in the world of teaching (gave me practical tips, smart observations, and crafted beautiful props when I started my career). She was a funny Auntie, making dry, witty comments and providing great advice. She and Uncle Ken provided a wonderful example of married life. She spoke so proudly of the life Devan and Sandy made together and, of course, about Kenzie. She was a superlative cook and baker. She was loved. My sincere condolences to Devan, Sandy, Kenzie as well as her friends and former students.
-Stephanie Beatty (nee Pincombe)

Devon and family I am so sorry for your loss, I remember Mrs. Thomas growing up as my music teacher. She was definitely a forced to be reckoned with, and under her tutelage I learned to love music. I found her very patient with me and those who wanted to listen. Deep deep respect for your mother, and great sorrow for your loss.
-William (Billy) Pollard
Devan I am truly sorry to hear of your Mother’s passing. It was an honour and privilege to know her and your Father. She was my music teacher throughout primary school and to be picked as one of her piano movers between classes was an honour. Mrs. Thomas may you rest in peace

Sadness filled my heart as I read of Mrs.Thomas’ passing. She taught me music for several years and was my grade 7 teacher. Always dressed impeccably she was epitome of professional. She was kind and had tremendous patience. At the end of the year she provided each of us a hand written letter…46 years later I still have mine. She is kind of teacher I hope everyone had at least once. My deepest condolences to her family.

I have so many fond memories of your mom, Devan. I was a student of hers at William Beatty School and sang in many a choral performance. We reconnected when I was a very unsure, but enthusiastic music teacher with the WPSBE. Her support and influence had a great impact on my career. I am eternally grateful for her incredible talents shared and encouragement. She always expected more…She was a true influencer. I am very sorry for your loss. Sending condolences from my husband Ron, and me.

Mrs Thomas was a teacher that made a difference in so many lives, including mine. She knew me from the time I was a little girl that started @ beatty. Years ago we crossed paths again when I was doing homecare & she was living at the Gardens. It was like time stood still ,we both remembered each other. Over those years we enjoyed many chats & I got to enjoy listening to her perform for the residents on the piano. She would often say to me call me Doreen , & I would always reply, you’ll always be Mrs Thomas to me ❤️ Sending my deepest condolences

My memories of Auntie Doreen are all about summer cottaging in Southampton. Walking through the maze of grassy dunes with Devan to the beach. Setting up pins at the ancient bowling alley/lunch counter for quarters to play pinball and those astonishing, new-fangled video games. And sitting around the fire at night as Doreen and Uncle Ken shared stories long and short that kept the family laughing and chatting. It was delight to see my mother Gwen light up being with her family. My heart goes out to Devan and the family.

My deepest condolences to Devan and his family.
Doreen was one of my favorite teachers. She taught me music for years and loved her job. I remember as a child going out for recess on a very cold day and losing one of my mittens and my fingers were so cold I couldn’t move them and Mrs. Thomas had noticed this and removed her own mittens and held my hand to warm it up and then gave up her own mittens for me so I wouldn’t get frost bite. She was always so kind and patient with all her students. When I went in to my nursing career she and Ken would critique my papers for me. I have many fond memories of Mrs. Thomas. She and Ken are now together again which is what she wanted.

Mrs. Thomas was that teacher that I think of when reflecting on my elementary school years. She was my first teacher to read chapter books to the class, I still remember The Christmas Carol. She taught us the joy of singing; the big event being a contata for Canada’s 100th birthday. Mrs Thomas was a teacher’s teacher and I’m so very sorry for your loss.

Devan and family, so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. Mrs. Thomas was a wonderful music teacher. Taught me how to play the clarinet and gave me an appreciation for classical music which I still have to this day. She will always be fondly remembered. My condolences to you and your family.

Sending my heartfelt condolences. Mrs. Thomas was my favourite music teacher as a kid. She helped my love of music and singing. I sang in her choir at William Beatty. A few years ago my husband and I ran Ivy’s taxi and my husband had the pleasure of meeting her. They talked and she gave him a couple sheets of a paper which had a class picture and some thoughts she had. Hugs, respect and thoughts, Ivy
