Smoczynski, Victoria Julia
Victoria (Vicki) Julia Smoczynski was a beloved great grandmother, grandmother, mother, and wife during her incredible 92 years of life. She passed away on the evening of June 19th 2024 at the Queensway Carlton Hospital in Ottawa.
Vicki was predeceased by her first husband Zdzislaw Karol Smoczynski and second husband Leo LaFrance. She is survived by her two children: Eva Krocko and her husband Jim Krocko, her son Peter Smoczynski and his wife Ann Archer. Vicki leaves behind her grandson Mark Krocko (and wife, Amanda), and two great-grandchildren: Isaac and Noah. She also leaves behind family member and god daughter Irene Depa of Montreal and many dear friends who will sadly miss her.
Vicki was born in Lwow, Poland on December 23, 1931 the only child to Ludwig and Micheline Nieckarz. Vicki was raised in the Lviv Oblast region (now the Ukraine) until WWII broke out in September of 1939. Vicki survived the war in Poland and in the postwar years escaped Stalinist Poland with her father to Sweden. In the summer of 1951 Vicki sailed from Stockholm to Halifax, Canada and the now famed Pier 21. She took up residence in Montreal where she eventually met her first husband (Zdzislaw Smoczynski). They wed in June of 1953. Together they raised their family in Montreal, Que. Vicki worked in the hospitality industry for 45 years before retiring in Ottawa.
Vicki’s flare for arranging social occasions in her home was well known and appreciated by family and friends. As long as memory serves Vicki was the original “foodie” pending hours and days preparing for traditional Christmas, Easter dinners and special occasions. Her love of entertaining gained her the reputation of a gracious host in her Florida winter home community with second husband Leo LaFrance. It was during these years Vicki became an avid accomplished golfer and involved with numerous charity and fund raising tournaments. Vicki also treasured travelling to tropical locales.
Most of all Vicki loved living life with her grandchildren. Her credo: “Family is everything.”
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects on Wednesday, July 3rd from 10-11am at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Ave. at Byron. Memorial service will be held in the chapel at 11am. Reception to follow.
Vicki’s family is deeply grateful to the Canadian Heart Institute, The Carp Commons Retirement Home for its quality of life and compassionate care, the Queensway Carleton Hospital’s front line staff and doctors whose vigilance and care was second to none in Vicki’s final days.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
