Sylvia Catherine Carter
April 29, 1920 to July 31, 2024
She left this world as she had wished. Until three days before her passing she was living in the family home in Fairhaven, Ottawa (with some assistance) with all her mental faculties intact. A stroke on July 28 took her to the Civic hospital.
She was born in 1920 in Tignish, P.E.I. to Joseph and Susan Morrissey. As a teenager during the Depression, she shared the hardships of farming life. The diet of mainly cod fish and potatoes may have been the foundation of her longevity. Poverty – and the expectations for women at that time – prevented her from getting more than a grade 10 education. After WW2, hundreds of Canadian soldiers were decommissioned in P.E.I. In local halls dances were held and the dark -haired beauty was spotted by Frank Carter from Toronto. With the blessings of their parents, Sylvia and Frank were married in Tignish in 1946.
Frank found work in Ottawa with the Federal Civil Service. They started a family: Joe (1947), Tom (1950), Mark (1953), and Chris (1955). Sylvia was predeceased by her husband in 2003 and by her youngest son, Chris who passed away much too early, October 1, 2022.
Sylvia was a life-long, avid reader and an attentive follower of current affairs. Until the end, her daily routine included reading a newspaper and watching an hour of PBS news.
Her main occupation was the family. She devoted her life to homemaking. The countless meals served at her dining table united family members, their spouses and children, and innumerable friends and guests. Her hospitality extended for so many years, it gave her children a common center even as they grew old.
Sylvia and Frank made their faith (Catholic) the center of their lives. They considered their souls as eternal realities and now they can share that together. The following is a prayer for her:
O Thou Kind Lord! This dearly cherished maidservant was attracted to Thee, and through reflection and discernment longed to attain Thy presence and enter Thy realms. With tearful eyes she fixed her gaze on the Kingdom of Mysteries. Many a night she spent in deep communion with Thee, and many a day she lived in intimate remembrance of Thee. At every morn she was mindful of Thee, and at every eve she centered her thoughts upon Thee. Like unto a singing nightingale she chanted Thy sacred verses, and like unto a mirror she sought to reflect Thy light.
O Thou Forgiver of sins! Open Thou the way for this awakened soul to enter Thy Kingdom, and enable this bird, trained by Thy hand, to soar in the eternal rose garden. She is afire with longing to draw nigh unto Thee; enable her to attain Thy presence. She is distraught and distressed in separation from Thee; cause her to be admitted into Thy Heavenly Mansion.
Services will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 400 St. Laurent Blvd, on Tuesday, August 6 at 10:30am. There will a reception after the Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Ottawa Soup Kitchen, Shepherd of Good Hope, and the Ottawa Mission, organizations Sylvia felt strongly about.
