In Memory of Sergeant (ret’d) Paulo (Paul) Jorge Batista
1963 – 2023
13/12/2023
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Sergeant (ret’d) Paulo (Paul) Jorge Batista, 60, of Ottawa, ON. He passed away peacefully on December 13th, 2023 with his beloved wife of 38 years, Susan (Sue), by his side.
Paul was born in 1963 in Setubal, Portugal. He came to Canada with his family in 1966 where he grew up in Ottawa.
Paul was a man of many talents. After graduating from Gloucester High School, he went on to study Architecture at Algonquin College. While architecture was not part of his career path, always the gifted craftsman, Paul continued to create beautiful spaces throughout his life. It was at the young age of 12 that Paul’s life of service began when he joined Army Cadets, and later the Army Reserves. When Paul enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces at 22, it was in pursuit of his passion for flying. Alas, flight was not where Paul was meant to land. His true calling was to serve the City of Ottawa as a Police Officer. Paul joined the Gloucester Police Service in 1987, now Ottawa Police Service (OPS), where he held many significant and diverse roles. He was a well-respected Police Officer who made lasting connections and lifelong friendships throughout his career. His retirement in 2020 marked a shift from a life in service to the community, to a life in service of his beloved family. This period of Paul’s life was for family and friends, visiting his home away from home (Florida), travel, outdoor adventures, playing guitar, and making beautiful memories with the joys of his life, his grandchildren: Kiera, Cade, Mikayla and Alyna.
Paul made such a positive difference in the lives he touched and was deeply loved as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. Those who knew Paul well, knew him as a determined, hardworking, and passionate man. Throughout his life, and until his last breath, he lived life his way, which means a life lived to the fullest. We love you, Paul, and miss you deeply – you will forever be with us in our hearts. We will be seeing you in all the old and familiar places.
Paul is survived by the love of his life, Sue, his children and their families: Courtenay (Byron, Mikayla, Alyna), Jonathan Scott (Stephanie, Kiera, Cade); his brothers and their families: Miguel (Ashley, Mylee, Degan, Hudson, Corbin), Filipe (Seanna, Skyla, Brooke, Nova); his mother: Fernanda; and, many devoted friends, in particular Norm Sandre, and extended family. Paul is predeceased by his father, Diamantino. We know you are flying with the angels and watching over us.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The Ottawa Police Association, 141 Catherine Street, on Sunday January 7, 2024, from 1300-1600. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Cancer Research at the Ottawa Hospital (TOH). For those wanting to solely pay their respects to the family, please arrive after 1500 hours. A zoom link to the Celebration of Life will be provided upon request to Sfrad025@live.ca
