It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Malcolm MacLeod Bernard on Thursday, August 8, 2024.
Malcolm was the devoted and beloved husband of Darlene McGinley, son of Norma Bernard (née Bourgaize) and the late Angus Bernard, and loving father to Caroline (Eric Salb), Eric (Emilie Kelso), and Danielle.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The consummate gentleman, Malcolm always opened and held the door. He was kind, generously offering hugs and a listening ear or chance for an invigorating discussion with family and friends. His booming voice and amazing ability of knowing the time without looking at his watch will be remembered by all who knew him. So too will his engaging smile and conversation: Malcolm was an intense follower of the news media, always ready to trade insights and ideas on just about any current event. In recent years, he also took great joy in his backyard oasis and made many happy with his BBQ and general cookery skills.
Malcolm also brought intensity and passion to his professional career. As a communications consultant, he was a central advisor on many high-profile projects, from the creation of Nunavut to the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Many Canadians will also remember his early work as an award-winning radio broadcaster and journalist (RTNDA awards) who covered events of national scope, such as the 1992 referendum on the Charlottetown Accord.
A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in the coming days—in person, in Ottawa and available online for those who would prefer to attend remotely. Those details will be available and shared shortly.
Despite our shattered hearts, we wish to thank the staff at the Ottawa Heart Institute who took such good care of Malcolm.
