With profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Gary Lawrence Cohen on October 28, 2024, cherished husband of Heather, loving father of Jessica, Jonathan (Nicole), and dear Zayda to Ori.
Gary died peacefully after enduring a great deal of pain, with some loving members of his family by his side: Heather, Jessica, Sandy and Allen Berkal, Sandy a sister-in-law but more like a sister since he had known her for 63 years.
Gary was predeceased by his father and mother, Edward and Malka Cohen, and his sister Care Cohen. He hadn’t seen his own loving father in 71 years; they are now reunited.
Gary was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He met his beloved, Heather, in the summer of 1961 at Winnipeg Beach. She subtly nudged him to ask her to the movies. They were inseparable for the next 63 years.
Gary was a very organized “numbers” man. A prolific reader of books on the American Civil War and baseball; he amassed a collection that threatened, at times, to overflow his home. He was a LifeMaster in Bridge and a life master in loving dogs. His canine companions were dear to him. Annie has stayed behind with Heather, but Joy, Socksy, Sandy, Charlie, Dee Dee and Brookie are on a long walk with him now. He had a very kind heart, and was a principled, caring family man and friend.
Special thanks to all the kind and excellent staff at the General Hospital on 6 N with a special heart to Lacey Harris who took care of Gary in December and now.
We will miss Gary greatly, to quote our favourite poem from Elizabeth Barrett Browning, “I love thee with the breath, smiles, tears of all my life; and if God so choose, I shall but love thee better after death”

A Funeral Service will be held at 2pm, Tuesday October 29, in the Cwinn Chapel at Jewish Memorial Gardens Osgoode, 6549 Herberts Corners Road, Greely. Interment will follow the service.
Shiva will commence following the interment at Temple Israel Synagogue 1301 Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa, with services at 4:30pm
Shiva will continue at 19 Moorcroft Road, Ottawa, Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm and Thursday from 2pm to 4pm and from 7pm to 9pm with services at 7:30pm both evenings.
Donations in Gary’s memory to the Ottawa Humane Society or the Ottawa Heart Institute would be greatly appreciated by his family.
