Dogan passed away peacefully in Ottawa surrounded by his family on July 18, 2024, in his 84th year. He was the cherished husband of Elizabeth, father of Peter (Shannon), Katie (Jodie Willis), Alexandra and Arabella, and adored grandfather and Papu to Isaak, Kohen, Jonas, Matthew, Tyler and Reid. He was the beloved brother of Roza Aronovitch (Hilliard), and doting uncle of Benjamin Aronovitch (Eva) and Davida Aronovitch (Scott Kaplanis).
Born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1940, Dogan emigrated with his parents Davit and Ines, and his sister to Montreal, Canada when he was 17. Determined to pursue a higher education, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in two years, obtained a Master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and pursued further studies at the University of Oxford.
Dogan taught at the University of Ottawa and Memorial University before his passion for the law led him to become a lay magistrate in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He then earned his law degree from McGill University and went on to have a distinguished career as a senior litigator in the Federal Department of Justice, deeply respected and appreciated by his colleagues.
After retiring, Dogan continued his intellectual pursuits, writing across various fields and contributing to numerous publications, focusing primarily on Jewish history, Genealogy, Canadian politics and the Middle East.
More than his achievements, Dogan’s legacy is defined by his courage, warmth and humour, which illuminated the lives of all around him. His devotion to family was profound and limitless, and his generosity boundless. His passing leaves a void, but his memory will remain in the hearts of his family forever.
A private celebration of Dogan’s life will be held in August 2024.
The family requests that donations in Dogan’s honour be made to Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency medical service and blood services organization, or a charity of your choice.
